Crucial Conversations Lab

Target Groups:
Executive or other teams that are under-performing, experiencing poor relationships, or are simply stuck in moving to the next level of effectiveness and/or service as a team.

Outcomes:
Team solves real problems in real time, and learns repeatable skills of relationship-building and problem-solving that allow it not only to make progress on current issues, but create the conditions for ongoing positive team development.

Description:
The Crucial Conversations Lab is a process combining instruction and coaching that focuses on solving real problems in intact management and work teams. Based on breakthrough ideas contained in the New York Times bestseller Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking when Stakes are High, this process enables executives and others to build trust, confront previously undiscussable concerns, and do so in a way that they can repeat and sustain after the lab.

The Crucial Conversations Lab is designed to:
  • Help leadership teams quickly and safely resolve the crucial conversations that are keeping them stuck.
  • Learn repeatable skills that help them better address crucial conversations on their own in the future.
  • Develop leaders through real-time coaching during the training process.

Process:
A Crucial Conversations Lab differs from traditional training. Each Lab is tailored to safely address the client's unique conversations and positively impact results in high-leverage areas.

  • Data gathering while trust building. VitalSmarts Master Certified Vital Skills consultants conduct interviews with each participant to gain understanding of the crucial conversations that are keeping the team stuck. This process simultaneously helps participants build trust with the facilitator - in whom they must have confidence to build safety while helping the team achieve unprecedented levels of candor.
  • Skill-building while problem solving. Participants next gather for 1 1/2 -2 days (depending on the extent of the issues to be addressed). During this time, the facilitator blends hard-hitting instruction in skills & principles with facilitated application, during which participants address their issues. Profound teaching opportunities occur spontaneously, as the facilitator offers real-time coaching to individual participants to help them learn to achieve complete candor while maintaining absolute safety for others.

At the conclusion of the Lab, participants will have learned between 1/3 and 1/2 of the skills & principles of Crucial Conversations. Facilitators will recommend follow-up options to allow team-members to continue their learning and application of the critical insights they have gained during the process.

Process Outline Timeframe:
  1. Pre-lab interviews - Vital Skills consultants conduct one-on-one interviews with senior leaders and/or team members to assess current behavior trends and issues.
    • 2 days
  2. Senior Leadership Team Crucial Conversations Lab - Based on data gathered from one-on-one interviews, Vital Skills designs a lab to address specific team crucial conversations.
    • 2 days
  3. Recommendations - Vital Skills makes on-going development recommendations based on lab outcomes.
    • 1 day (optional, may include coaching of person in key position)
