Team
Vitality - Single Point Lessons
Problem:
Years ago while interviewing
a team as part of a culture assessment,
we heard the following comment, "On
our team, we used to stab each other
in the back, but now, we make sure we
have eye contact and go for the chest."
Over the years, we've discovered that
every team fits on a continuum between
death and vitality and is moving in
one way or the other. This team clearly
was not healthy or functional. The team
wasn't getting results and the work
wasn't enjoyable. Like many teams, this
team suffered from a malaise-they experienced
average results, a working environment
that seemed cold, and relationships
that made most people feel that work
was just a job. From a team leader's
perspective, there are also problems.
How do you get a team to rally around
making improvements in results and in
working and acting as a team, particularly
when you're busier than you've ever
been and you don't have a lot of time
or budget for training?
Solution:
Team Vitality is
a process that team members and management
engage in to work together to improve
the quality of work and the quality
of work life. They do this by assessing
their own strengths and opportunities,
both in results and relationships.
Often teams suffer because they live
by the 40-0 Rule.
For 40 hours, we work very hard to serve
our customers and get our work done,
and we spend no time celebrating, planning,
or improving our work, processes, or
service.
Our experience is that leaders and teams/work
groups need to consistently follow the
39-1 Rule:
For 39 hours, we work very hard to serve
our customers and other stakeholders,
and for one hour we work to improve,
celebrate, and plan.
For teams and workgroups to improve
their work and their work life, they
have to spend some time together. They
also need to work on improving their
own skills, using team tools to improve
their work and their working relationships.
That's what Team Vitality provides-a
tested approach with skills and tools
to improve the quality of work and the
quality of work life
Features:
Team Vitality is
designed to be taught in a variety of
ways, by leaders and by training professionals.
Included in the materials are 12 Single
Point Lessons that can be taught in
about one-hour sessions. It comes with
a leader's guide and an Implementation
Manual. All sessions begin with interesting
and engaging exercises that ensure the
training is relevant. Most training
sessions include practical and entertaining
video examples. In addition, Team Vitality
includes a TEAMWORK assessment, a 32-question
assessment that is self-administered
and scored. This assessment allows teams
to understand their strengths and opportunities
for improvement, and then focus on what
their team specifically needs to work
on to improve both their work and their
team.
